Re:Nylon
Nylon has been a major material for Prada. The debut of the brand's '84 collection Pocone in its line of bags and accessories received worldwide praise. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy collection of a buzzbeast-ready, sexy diffusion that Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in at the Met Gala. The Milan-based powerhouse has changed its iconic nylon bags into sustainable ReNylon fabrics. The new collection includes six classic designs - a belt bag (pictured), a shoulder bag (pictured) and a tote bag (pictured) and a duffle bag (pictured) and two backpacks - in repurposed ECONYL fabrics made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.
The material that is repurposed is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn producer which produces Econyl fabric out of regenerated nylon waste, which can be reused over and over again without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed material is part of a larger effort to shift Prada's entire collection from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. The collection includes six new handbags made of Re:Nylon and a pair of ECONYL shoes and boots, and a line of apparel made of the same material.
Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", a video series that highlights the unique method used to create Re:Nylon bags. The first video includes Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.
With the switch to re:Nylon Prada is achieving the biggest reduction in the use of virgin nylon yet, resulting in the saving of 70 000 barrels of oil every year, The Business of Fashion reports. This move will also lower the carbon emissions of the company by about 57,000 tons. The label recently went fur-free on its clothes and accessories. This is the latest sustainability initiative.
Recycled Nylon
Recycled nylon is not without its drawbacks. It isn't biodegradable and will be buried in landfills or the ocean for decades before being broken down into smaller particles that could cause harm to wildlife. bag Prada is also not breathable and is able to shed microplastics once washed. However, it uses 50% less energy to produce as compared to regular nylon and is more durable than other bag materials such as wool or cotton.
The fabric is made of a mixture of waste plastics and petroleum, that is made from fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources and also the carbon emissions resulting from the production of virgin nylon. It is also less difficult than other bags to handle since it doesn't need to be dyed or woven. This makes it an ideal option for bags that are going to be used regularly for gym or yoga equipment.
In addition to its environmental advantages, recycled nylon is a stronger and more flexible fabric than traditional polyester or cotton. It's also able withstand the most severe abuse and is therefore ideal for backpacks and other outdoor gear. The material is also incredibly lightweight and is easily shaped and stitched to create the ideal shape for bags. Nylon is a great material for outdoor gear because it's resistant to water and does not absorb smells.
When choosing a sustainable bag, make sure to look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification tests for chemical residue, as in addition to social and environmental responsibility. This certification is a good indication of brands that are transparent and responsible.
Patagonia offers, for example, a range backpacks and yoga equipment made of recycled nylon, which is known as Econyl. The nylon is produced in a closed-loop process which requires 50% less energy than regular virgin nylon. The brand also supports organizations who are dedicated to protecting our planet.
